Extension to Special Needs School

Redgates Primary School

This project comprised the construction of a large extension to provide additional teaching facilities to an existing special needs school.

Access to the site where the building was to be constructed was particularly difficult. A 500m temporary roadway was installed to allow delivery vehicles to services the Site. This temporary roadway passed two main entrances to the school therefore traffic management on this project was particularly important.

Due to the sloping nature all foundations had to be piled. Modular design was used to construct the building, a total of 15 units where required.

The external elevations of the building were clad with coloured metal panels.

The interior was fitted to a high standard with attention paid to the specific needs of the pupils.

The internal space was divided into:

  • 4no classrooms
  • A sensory room
  • A multi sensory room
  • A quiet room
  • Staff room & break out area
  • Toilet facilities

An enclosed external area were created with cantilevered canopies to provide a covered external learning space.

The area surrounding the new extension was landscaped which included a sensory garden for use by the pupils.
